Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2024

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, one of Japan’s largest art festivals, is set to take place across Niigata Prefecture from July 13 to November 10, 2024. This year’s event features works by over 275 artists and groups from 41 countries, including 100 new commissions. The festival’s focus on art that reflects its relationship to the natural environment is evident in works such as MAD Architects’ refurbishment of the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel, which transforms the old concrete footway into a meditation on color, light, and space.

The festival also includes notable installations like Antony Gormley’s new work from his *Man Rock* series and Ayşe Erkmen’s reconstruction of a dwelling collapsed in the 2004 Niigata Chuetsu earthquake. Visitors can expect an immersive experience as they explore the 760sqkm of the ‘Echigo-Tsumari Art Field’ across six regions of the mountainous prefecture.

Katsuro Yoshida Exhibition at Saitama Museum of Modern Art

A major retrospective of Katsuro Yoshida’s work is set to open at the Saitama Museum of Modern Art from July 13 to September 23, 2024. Yoshida, a key figure in Japan’s Mono-ha movement, is known for his sculptural works that explore the properties of materials. The exhibition, titled *Touching Things, Landscapes, and the World*, offers a broad view of Yoshida’s oeuvre, highlighting his commitment to printmaking, photography, and later, painting and drawing.

The exhibition is particularly significant as it marks a homecoming for Yoshida, who was born in Saitama, and provides an opportunity to trace the evolution of Mono-ha. Additionally, a monographic show of Yoshida’s work will be held at Yumiko Chiba Associates in Tokyo.
